One of the most pressing—and misunderstood—issues facing sewer and septic systems today is the use of products marketed as “flushable.” At the upcoming WCOWMA-BC Convention, we’re honoured to feature Barry Orr, Environmental Science Officer and nationally recognized leader in wastewater protection, for an essential session on this topic.
With more than 30 years of experience in compliance oversight, environmental protection, and wastewater operations, Barry has worked extensively with municipalities, utilities, and industry partners across Canada. As spokesperson for the Municipal Enforcement Sewer Use Group (MESUG), he has been at the forefront of advancing evidence-based standards and public education—many will recognize the message: “Toilets are not garbage cans.”
🧠 Session Overview:
Standardize the term “flushable” for safer sewer and septic systems!
Barry’s presentation will explore the real operational, financial, and environmental impacts caused by wipes and other products falsely labelled as “flushable.” In the absence of a legally recognized Canadian standard, these products continue to strain both municipal and onsite systems. This session will unpack the science, the evidence, and the urgent need for a harmonized national approach to protect infrastructure, public health, and the environment.
This is a must-attend session for regulators, practitioners, designers, installers, and anyone invested in the long-term resilience of wastewater systems.
We look forward to welcoming you to Nanaimo for these critical conversations and more.
