Spring has sprung and with it the start of field training! Twelve students enjoyed a sunny day on Denman Island on April 17th learning how to assess soils.
Steve Carballeira led the class in the selection of test pit location, test pit excavation, horizon by horizon assessment, and the application of the findings to a system design. Thanks to Darryl Brizan and Zoe Cilliers for supporting Steve at this training event.
Evaluations submitted after the training day show that a good learning experience was enjoyed by all. Special thanks to member Jarrett Larson for use of his site for this valuable training experience.

While students were getting their hands dirty on Denman on April 17, students in Blind Bay were also working on soil assessment in the field.
Site and soil assessment training led by Kent Watson and Liesbeth Glotze was undertaken at a site provided by member Tim Witzke. Thirteen students took advantage of the opportunity to learn how to assess soil in field. Students for this class will be taking an opportunity to review the findings and apply them in the design process during an evening webinar on April 30.
Special thanks to Tim Witzke for allowing us use of his site and for excavating the test pits for us!
These training workshops provided information on assessing soil structure and texture, assessing site conditions and constraints, logging information and applying that knowledge to the design of onsite systems.
